Description
Along the medial border of the male forefoot, the hallucial eminence forms the rounded soft-tissue contour over the head of the first metatarsal and the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux (great toe). The hallux lies distal to the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, with the plantar pad positioned inferiorly and the dorsal skin and nail unit superiorly. Medially, the eminence corresponds to the capsule and medial collateral ligament region, while laterally it transitions toward the first web space between the hallux and second toe. Bony prominence and overlying skin folds define the outline. Clinically, this is the surface anatomy that frames the common bunion, hallux valgus, where the first metatarsal deviates medially and the hallux drifts laterally, creating a tender medial eminence and inflamed bursa at the first MTP joint. It is also a key teaching view for hallux rigidus, where dorsal osteophytes at the first MTP limit dorsiflexion and shift load to the plantar sesamoids, a frequent source of forefoot pain in runners and patients with altered gait mechanics. Landmarks here guide physical examination, shoe-wear counseling, and the incision planning used in bunionectomy and first-ray osteotomy procedures. Surface anatomy matters. Use this artwork for podiatry and orthopaedic teaching modules on first-ray biomechanics, clinical skills resources on forefoot inspection and palpation, and medical publishing content covering hallux valgus, bursitis, and MTP joint arthritis in the adult male foot.
