Description
Anterior thoracic topography beneath the adult female breast is rendered with emphasis on the inframammary fold (inframammary crease) where the inferior pole of the breast meets the chest wall. The fold courses transversely along the inferior margin of the breast, sitting inferior to the nipple areola complex and anterior to the ribs and intercostal spaces, with the breast mound projecting anterolaterally over pectoralis major. Medially, the contour approaches the parasternal region and sternum; laterally it sweeps toward the anterior axillary line, where the breast tail and lateral chest wall transition into the axilla. For operative planning, the inframammary fold acts as a fixed surface landmark that helps define breast base width and the lower pole boundary during augmentation, reduction mammaplasty, and mastopexy, and it frequently serves as an access route for subpectoral implant placement. Small errors in fold position translate into obvious asymmetry: an elevated fold can create a “double-bubble” contour, while inferior malposition increases bottoming out and alters nipple-to-fold distance.
