Description
Anterior surface anatomy of the male inguinal (groin) region is presented with the inguinal ligament spanning inferomedially from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle, forming the visible skin crease at the junction of lower abdominal wall and proximal thigh. Medial to this line, the pubic symphysis and pubic crest define the midline landmarking for the superficial inguinal ring, while the femoral triangle begins just inferior to the ligament with the palpable femoral pulse positioned midway between the ASIS and pubic symphysis. Lateral iliac contouring frames the region superiorly, and the proximal thigh surface lies inferior to the ligament as the groin transitions into the anterior compartment. Surface anatomy here is not decorative. Precise localization relative to the inguinal ligament separates inguinal hernias (above and medial to the pubic tubercle) from femoral hernias (below the ligament and inferolateral to the pubic tubercle), a distinction that predicts strangulation risk and guides urgent referral. The same landmarks anchor bedside examination of the femoral artery and inform access planning for femoral arterial puncture, where a puncture too distal tracks toward the femoral triangle and risks pseudoaneurysm, while too proximal enters the retroperitoneal space.
