Description
Dominating the lateral aspect of the calvaria, the parietal bone (os parietale) forms a smooth convex surface between the frontal bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly, meeting its counterpart across the sagittal suture at the cranial midline. Inferiorly, its squamous border approximates the temporal region where the squamous suture relates to the temporal bone, and the superior temporal line can be appreciated as a subtle ridge curving anteroposteriorly. Near the posterosuperior quadrant, the parietal eminence marks the maximal lateral convexity, while the pterion lies more anteroinferiorly where the frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones converge. Clean landmarks. Fast orientation. Surface anatomy of the parietal region matters because it anchors several clinical decision points in neurotrauma and cranial surgery. The pterion is a thin bony junction, and blunt impact here can lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery deep to the temporal fossa, producing an epidural hematoma with a classic lucid interval. This lateral perspective also supports teaching of cranial sutures and fontanelle-derived growth patterns, since suture location and morphology guide age estimation and help distinguish normal variants from diastatic fractures on CT. Neuroanatomy and gross anatomy courses use this view to drill identification of sutures, the parietal eminence, and the temporal lines before layering in scalp, temporalis, and meningeal relationships. It also fits radiology atlases and trauma education materials that correlate external landmarks with fracture lines and hemorrhage risk in the lateral skull.
