Seen in strict lateral projection, the distal humerus is profiled with the capitulum positioned anterior to the olecranon fossa, articulating with the radial head and neck while the trochlea and ulna sit more medial and are partially foreshortened. Posteriorly, the olecranon process and the insertion of the triceps brachii tendon align with the long axis of the humeral shaft, and anterior to the joint the coronoid region and brachialis tendon footprint are suggested by the anterior contour. Along the lateral margin, the lateral epicondyle anchors the common extensor tendon origin (including extensor carpi radialis brevis) and the lateral collateral ligament complex, with the annular ligament encircling the radial head at the proximal radioulnar joint.
