Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the female thoracic cage is presented from an anterior perspective with the manubrium, body of the sternum, and xiphoid process aligned on the midline, flanked symmetrically by the costal cartilages and the anterior arcs of ribs 1 through 10. Superiorly, the clavicles articulate with the manubrium at the sternoclavicular joints, while the first rib and costal cartilage sit deep to the clavicular contour. Inferiorly, the costal margin formed by ribs 7 to 10 converges toward the xiphisternal region, defining the subcostal angle and framing the superior abdominal aperture. Anterior thoracic cage anatomy is the working map for common access points and for avoiding them. Intercostal neurovascular bundles run along the inferior border of each rib, so chest tube placement and thoracentesis are directed just superior to the rib margin (often at the 4th or 5th intercostal space in the mid-axillary line), and sternal anatomy guides safe midline entry during median sternotomy while highlighting risks such as internal thoracic artery injury near the parasternal region. Rib and sternal fractures also read differently in women because breast tissue can obscure surface landmarks, yet the bony relationships remain fixed. Landmarks matter.
