Description
Oriented in a lateral projection of the adult female thorax, the rib cage contours are defined by the curving costae and their intercostal spaces, with the sternum and costal cartilages implied anteriorly and the thoracic vertebral column lying posterior to the rib angles. Superficial landmarks you would expect in this view include the clavicle superiorly, the scapular outline over the posterolateral chest wall, and the costal margin sweeping inferoanteriorly toward the xiphisternal region. Overlying soft tissues follow the thoracic wall, including the breast mound on the anterolateral chest and the transition into the axillary fold laterally. A lateral thoracic view is the one clinicians reach for when teaching surface anatomy for auscultation and pleural procedures, because rib counting and intercostal space identification are more intuitive when the rib arcs and angles are not foreshortened. Needle decompression and tube thoracostomy depend on this relationship: the 4th to 5th intercostal space at the anterior to mid-axillary line targets the pleural cavity while minimizing risk to the internal mammary vessels medially and the neurovascular bundle that runs along the inferior border of each rib. Rib fractures also follow a pattern that makes sense here, often occurring near the rib angle where bending stresses concentrate and where pain can limit ventilation. Landmarks matter.
