Description
Oriented in a lateral (radial) view of the female antebrachium, the proximal forearm is anchored by the lateral epicondyle of the humerus with the radius positioned lateral to the ulna along its full length. Superficial contours typically include the brachioradialis forming the anterolateral border, with extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis lying just posterior to it and running distally toward the base of the second and third metacarpals. Distally, the radial styloid and the first dorsal compartment region at the dorsolateral wrist frame the transition into the anatomical snuffbox, where the tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis cross obliquely. Clinically, this lateral forearm perspective maps directly onto pain generators and surgical intervals encountered in practice, because the common extensor origin at the lateral epicondyle is the locus for lateral epicondylitis and the radial tunnel lies deep to brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis brevis where the posterior interosseous nerve can be compressed. Small positional differences matter: forearm pronation shifts the radius over the ulna and changes tendon prominence at the radial wrist, a teaching point when differentiating de Quervain tenosynovitis from intersection syndrome and when planning corticosteroid injection into the first extensor compartment.
