Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of an adult female shoulder, the spherical head of the humerus sits congruent with the glenoid cavity of the scapula, with the acromion projecting superiorly and posteriorly as a bony roof over the joint space. Anterior to the glenoid, the coracoid process extends like a hook, creating a recognizable interval with the acromion that frames the coracoacromial arch. Lateral clavicle meets the acromion at the acromioclavicular joint, while the scapular body lies medial to the joint and the proximal humeral shaft continues distally from the anatomical neck. Orientation is clear. Lateral shoulder anatomy matters because most clinically relevant motion is expressed at the glenohumeral joint, but the limits are set by the scapular girdle and its arches. This view supports teaching of abduction and flexion mechanics, where clearance beneath the acromion becomes a practical constraint and the greater tubercle approaches the coracoacromial arch.
