Deep to these muscles, the costal margin and lower ribs sit superiorly while the iliac crest and anterior superior iliac spine define the inferior-lateral contour of the trunk. Retroperitoneal landmarks such as the kidney and suprarenal region lie posterior to the peritoneal cavity, adjacent to the psoas major and quadratus lumborum, while the ascending or descending colon tracks vertically along the lateral abdomen. A lateral abdominal view helps you teach what is truly posterior and retroperitoneal versus intraperitoneal, a distinction that drives both diagnosis and operative planning.
