Description
Seen from a lateral profile, the posterior female trunk is defined by the cervical and thoracic curvature transitioning into the lumbar lordosis, with the scapula and posterior ribs creating the dominant contours of the upper back. Superficially, the trapezius descends from the nuchal region toward the spine of the scapula, while the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward the posterior axillary fold, covering the posterolateral thoracic wall. Along the midline, the spinous processes form a palpable vertical landmark, flanked by the erector spinae muscle mass that thickens inferiorly as it approaches the iliac crest. Clear surface anatomy. This lateral posterior view matters when you need to teach or plan around landmarks that clinicians actually palpate: scapular position relative to thoracic spinous levels, the posterior axillary line, and the relationship of the lower ribs to the costovertebral angle overlying the kidneys.
