Description
Unilateral dermatome bands are mapped across one half of an adult female figure, following the cutaneous sensory territories supplied by spinal nerve roots from the cervical region through the sacral segments. On the trunk, segmental zones run in a largely horizontal pattern from the posterior midline toward the anterior midline, while the upper limb dermatomes sweep from the lateral shoulder and arm into the forearm and hand in a proximodistal sequence. In the lower limb, the territories arc over the buttock and thigh and continue to the leg and foot, with medial and lateral borders that shift predictably as you move inferiorly. Dermatome charts matter most when you need to localize a lesion to a specific nerve root rather than a peripheral nerve, and a half-body layout reduces left-right visual noise during teaching and documentation. Radicular pain from cervical or lumbosacral disc herniation often follows these distributions, and a clinician can compare reported numbness or dysesthesia to classic patterns such as C6 to the thumb, C8 to the little finger, L5 to the dorsum of the foot, or S1 to the lateral foot. It is a working map. Overlap between adjacent roots and individual variation remain the rule, which is why dermatomes pair best with myotomes and reflex testing when assessing suspected radiculopathy, herpes zoster, or spinal cord level.
