Description

Anterior shoulder anatomy is presented with the deltoid forming the rounded lateral contour, its fibers spanning from the lateral third of the clavicle, acromion, and scapular spine toward the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. Medial to the deltoid, the clavicle tracks horizontally to the sternoclavicular region, while the coracoid process sits anteromedial to the glenohumeral joint line as a palpable bony landmark. The proximal humerus lies inferior to the acromion, and the glenohumeral articulation occupies the interval between the humeral head and the glenoid of the scapula, deep to the anterior deltoid. Clinical teaching often hinges on this anterior surface anatomy because it is where examination, injections, and portals start. The deltopectoral interval (between anterior deltoid and pectoralis major) guides the standard deltopectoral approach for shoulder arthroplasty and fracture fixation, and it is also where the cephalic vein is commonly identified and protected. Injection landmarks are also tied to this view: glenohumeral joint injections are typically directed just inferior and medial to the coracoid process, while subacromial bursa injections relate to the acromion and the superior deltoid. Small distances. Big consequences. Use this artwork in undergraduate gross anatomy and surface anatomy modules, orthopaedic and sports medicine teaching files on glenohumeral instability and rotator cuff disease, and surgical education materials introducing the deltopectoral approach and anterior shoulder injection technique. It also fits patient-facing handouts where clear, uncluttered male anterior shoulder landmarks support consent discussions and rehab instructions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
