Seen from a dorsal (posterior) perspective, the adult male buttock contour is defined inferiorly by the gluteal fold (sulcus glutealis), a transverse skin crease that marks the junction between the gluteal region and the posterior proximal thigh. Superomedial to the fold, the gluteal prominence overlies gluteus maximus, while the fold itself lies inferior to the greater trochanter laterally and approaches the midline over the sacral region medially. Distal to the crease, the posterior thigh skin transitions toward the hamstring compartment beneath. A clean surface landmark. Clinically, the sulcus glutealis is used as a surface reference when planning incision placement and dressing coverage for posterior hip approaches, where scar position relative to the fold affects friction, maceration, and patient comfort during sitting.
