Description
Viewed from the posterior, the male buttocks transition inferiorly into the gluteal fold (sulcus), a transverse furrow marking the surface boundary between the gluteal region and the proximal posterior thigh. Superior to the crease lies the convex soft tissue overlying gluteus maximus, while inferior and distal to it the posterior thigh contour begins toward the hamstring compartment. Medially, the fold approaches the intergluteal cleft, and laterally it fades toward the greater trochanteric region where the hip contour rounds into the lateral thigh. Clear surface anatomy. The gluteal fold is a dependable external landmark when teaching regional anatomy and when planning procedures around the hip and proximal thigh, because it approximates the inferior margin of gluteus maximus and helps orient clinicians to the level of the ischial tuberosity deeper in the posterior perineal region. Surgeons and wound care teams also reference this crease when describing the location of pressure injury, hidradenitis suppurativa, or postoperative scar placement around the buttock and upper thigh, where moisture and shear concentrate along the furrow. It is a small line with outsized practical value.
