Description
Dorsally, the posterior (extensor) compartment of the male antebrachium is presented from an external back view, with the superficial extensor muscle bellies tapering distally into long tendons as they approach the wrist. Extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis occupy the lateral (radial) side, while extensor digitorum sits more centrally with its tendinous slips aligned in parallel toward the dorsum of the hand. Medially (ulnar side), extensor carpi ulnaris forms a distinct border along the posterior ulna, and the proximal mass of brachioradialis can be appreciated anterolaterally as it frames the extensor group. This dorsal arrangement matters when teaching tendon topography and diagnosing overuse syndromes around the distal forearm and wrist, where pain localizes to specific extensor tendons under the extensor retinaculum. Intersection syndrome, for example, occurs where the tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis cross the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis in the distal dorsal forearm, while lateral epicondylalgia often reflects pathology at the common extensor origin proximally. Surface landmarks guide procedures too. Palpation and ultrasound tracing of extensor carpi ulnaris along the ulnar groove can help confirm subsheath injury in ulnar-sided wrist pain.
