Description
Centered on the lateral cranium, the female temporal region is defined by the shallow concavity of the temporal fossa superior to the zygomatic arch and anterior to the auricle. Surface landmarks commonly visible include the lateral orbital rim and lateral canthus anteriorly, the superior margin of the zygomatic bone and arch inferiorly, and the temporal hairline with the superior temporal line coursing posterosuperiorly. The soft-tissue contour reflects the temporalis muscle deep to the temporal fascia, while the superficial temporal artery and vein typically track vertically just anterior to the tragus before dividing into frontal and parietal branches. Clinically, few facial areas demand tighter respect for surface anatomy. Palpation and mapping of the superficial temporal artery in front of the ear guides temporal artery biopsy and ultrasound assessment in suspected giant cell arteritis, and it also informs safe placement of incisions for rhytidectomy and temporal brow lift. The temporal branch of the facial nerve crosses the zygomatic arch in a relatively superficial plane and is vulnerable during temple dissections, and loss of temporal fat pad volume or temporalis atrophy produces the hollowed temple contour often addressed with filler or fat grafting. A thin skin envelope. Limited margin for error.
