Description

Anterior neck surface anatomy is centered on the infrahyoid region between the hyoid bone superiorly and the manubrium and medial clavicles inferiorly, with the midline defined by the laryngeal prominence and the tracheal groove. Just deep to the skin contour lie the strap muscles: sternohyoid and omohyoid positioned more superficially, with sternothyroid and thyrohyoid deep and running from the posterior surface of the manubrium and thyroid cartilage up toward the hyoid apparatus. The thyroid cartilage sits superior to the cricoid cartilage, and the trachea descends inferiorly in the midline, while the sternocleidomastoid forms the lateral boundary of the neck and frames the infrahyoid field. Surface contour in this zone matters because it is where clinicians orient themselves for airway, endocrine, and cervical procedures, using the hyoid, thyroid notch, and cricoid ring as palpable waypoints. Emergency cricothyrotomy targets the cricothyroid membrane between thyroid and cricoid cartilages, and a tracheostomy is placed inferior to the cricoid to avoid the vocal folds while accounting for the thyroid isthmus crossing the upper tracheal rings. Thin, paired strap muscles are the first muscular layer opened and retracted in standard thyroidectomy, and their position also explains why anterior neck infections or postoperative hematoma can track in the midline. Useful for teaching head and neck surface anatomy, introductory gross anatomy labs, and clinical skills sessions on airway landmarks and thyroid examination in adult male patients.
