Seen from the dorsal aspect, the male foot is presented from the ankle toward the toes, with the dorsum forming a gentle convex contour between the malleolar region proximally and the metatarsophalangeal joints distally. Subcutaneous extensor tendons typically stand out beneath the skin, including extensor hallucis longus coursing to the hallux and extensor digitorum longus dividing toward digits two through five, while extensor digitorum brevis creates a low muscular prominence on the dorsolateral midfoot. The medial border aligns with the first metatarsal and hallux, and the lateral border tracks along the fifth metatarsal to the little toe. Dorsal veins and cutaneous ridges from toe extension may be apparent. Clear landmarks. Clinically, the dorsum is where tendon contour and swelling are easiest to compare side to side in suspected extensor tendon injury, tenosynovitis, or midfoot sprain after inversion trauma.
