Viewed from the dorsal external surface, the male forefoot (metatarsus) is centered on metatarsals I through V, extending distally to the metatarsophalangeal joints and proximally toward the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) line. The hallux lies medially with the first ray leading to the first metatarsal head, while digits II to V align progressively lateral across the metatarsal heads to the fifth metatarsal tuberosity region. The intermetatarsal spaces separate the metatarsal shafts, and the ball of the foot corresponds to the plantar projection of the metatarsal heads just proximal to the toe creases.
