Description
Curled in a typical flexed fetal posture at approximately gestational week 12, the conceptus is shown with a disproportionately large head positioned superiorly and anteriorly relative to the thorax, with the chin approaching the upper chest. Upper limbs lie anterolateral to the trunk with the elbows flexed and the hands near the face, while the lower limbs remain flexed at the hips and knees with distinguishable toes distally. An umbilical cord extends from the fetal umbilicus to the placenta in the background, its paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein suggested by the surface vascular patterning within the cord and placental plate. Week 12 marks the transition into the fetal period in common clinical parlance, when organogenesis is largely complete and growth, ossification, and external morphologic refinement become the dominant teaching points. Facial structures are sufficiently formed to support discussions of midline development, and the presence and course of the umbilical cord to the placenta anchors explanations of fetoplacental circulation and the oxygenated return via the umbilical vein to the fetal liver and ductus venosus.
