Description
Week 14 fetus rests in lateral profile within the gravid uterus, with the fetal head oriented superiorly and the trunk flexed toward the umbilical insertion. Placental tissue occupies one uterine wall, and the umbilical cord courses from the fetal anterior abdominal wall (umbilicus) toward the chorionic plate, with its proximal segment positioned anterior to the fetal abdomen in this fixed side-on perspective. The gestational sac and surrounding uterine wall frame the conceptus, with the cervix and lower uterine segment inferomedial to the main uterine cavity depending on the cropping. Black fetal skin tone is represented consistently across exposed integument. At 14 weeks’ gestation, clinicians transition from late first-trimester to early second-trimester assessment, when crown–rump length has largely given way to biparietal diameter and femur length as practical biometric anchors, and placental location begins to matter for counseling about previa and later bleeding risk.
