Description
Fetus at 24 weeks’ gestation occupies the amniotic cavity within the gravid uterus in a lateral profile, with the fetal head and trunk aligned along the uterine long axis and the flexed lower limbs oriented inferiorly. Placental tissue apposes the uterine wall, and the umbilical cord courses from the fetal umbilicus to its placental insertion, suspended in amniotic fluid. The uterine wall is appreciable as a thick myometrial envelope, with the endometrial decidua and fetal membranes (amnion and chorion) defining the interface between conceptus and maternal pelvis. Brown fetal skin tone is represented. At this second-trimester stage, placental location and cord insertion are frequent points of clinical attention because low-lying placentation and placenta previa drive bleeding risk, while marginal or velamentous insertion alters vulnerability of fetal vessels and can complicate delivery planning.
