Description
Oriented from an inferior viewpoint, the visceral surface of the right lobe of the male liver is presented with emphasis on the posterior inferior contour. The renal impression lies posterolaterally, a concavity molded by the superior pole of the right kidney, while the colic impression occupies a more anterolateral position where the hepatic flexure abuts the liver. Medially, the inferior surface transitions toward the porta hepatis region and the fissural planes that separate the right lobe from the quadrate and caudate territories. Surface anatomy matters here. Understanding these impressions is not academic trivia, it helps you anticipate organ relationships during right upper quadrant surgery and interpret cross sectional imaging where contact surfaces can mimic pathology. A prominent renal impression can be mistaken for a capsular defect on ultrasound, and the colic impression becomes relevant when hepatic flexure distension, colitis, or Chilaiditi type interposition alters the usual liver colon interface. Surgeons mobilizing the right lobe during cholecystectomy or hepatic resection often encounter these posterior relations while working near the hepatorenal recess (Morison pouch), a frequent site of dependent fluid on trauma FAST.
