Description
Anteriorly oriented, the sacrum fills the frame with the promontory superiorly and the tapering apex inferiorly toward the coccygeal articulation. Across the pelvic surface, four paired anterior sacral foramina appear as smooth, rounded openings arranged in vertical rows lateral to the fused sacral bodies and medial to the sacral ala. The animation holds a true front view while subtly advancing depth and light to clarify the foraminal margins and the transverse ridges marking intersegmental fusion. Clinically, these foramina correspond to the exit pathways for the ventral rami of S1 to S4, nerves that contribute to the lumbosacral plexus and pelvic splanchnic outflow. Seeing their consistent spacing relative to the promontory and ala helps when correlating pelvic pain patterns with sacral root pathology, and when planning screw trajectories in sacroiliac fixation where cortical corridors run close to foraminal boundaries. Motion-based shading and slight parallax make the foraminal rims and adjacent bony landmarks easier to appreciate than a single still, reducing common orientation errors between anterior foramina and the posterior sacral foramina on the dorsal surface. A hard landmark. Use this sequence in gross anatomy and osteology teaching, radiology correlation for pelvic CT orientation, and surgical education modules covering sacral fractures, SI joint instrumentation, and anterior approaches to the lumbosacral junction. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
