Description
Palmar wrist anatomy is presented in frontal orientation, centering on the carpus at the junction of the forearm and manus. The distal radius and ulna sit proximally, with the proximal carpal row (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform) arranged from lateral to medial, and the distal row (trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate) articulating distally with the bases of the metacarpals. Superficial and deep ligamentous connections span the intercarpal and carpometacarpal joints, including the palmar radiocarpal and ulnocarpal ligaments, interosseous ligaments between adjacent carpal bones, and the transverse carpal ligament forming the volar roof of the carpal tunnel. Spatial relationships read cleanly from radial to ulnar side. This palmar perspective matters because many symptomatic wrist conditions localize to the volar carpus, where tight ligamentous constraints and limited space amplify small changes in alignment. Scaphoid waist fractures and scapholunate ligament tears often present with subtle instability that propagates into scapholunate advanced collapse, and a clear anterior map of carpal relationships helps explain why dorsal intercalated segment instability hinges on scaphoid and lunate coupling even when pain is volar. Carpal tunnel syndrome also lives here, with median nerve compression beneath the flexor retinaculum at the level of the pisiform and scaphoid tubercle. A tight corridor.
