Description
Anterior-frontal radiography frames the male axial and appendicular skeleton in anatomical position, from the calvaria and mandible superiorly down to the femora, tibiae, and fibulae distally. The skull aligns with the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral column along the midline, while the ribs and sternum form the thoracic cage anterior to the spine and lateral to the mediastinum. Laterally, the clavicles and scapulae anchor the shoulder girdles, continuing into the humeri, radii, and ulnae with the carpals and metacarpals at the distal extremities. Inferiorly, the sacrum articulates with the innominates, defining the pelvic ring, and the acetabula receive the femoral heads. This projection is the workhorse view for teaching bony landmarks and joint congruity because it preserves left-right symmetry and makes gross alignment errors obvious at a glance. Fracture patterns and dislocations often declare themselves here, from clavicular and distal radius fractures to femoral neck injury, and it is also the clearest setup for discussing scoliosis screening, pelvic tilt, and leg length discrepancy when paired with measurement. Growth plates are absent in the adult male skeleton, so epiphyseal lines, trabecular pattern, and cortical thickness become the relevant radiographic cues. A baseline reference. Use it in gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy courses when students need a single overview of the skeletal system before moving to regional projections, and in textbooks or e-learning modules that introduce axial versus appendicular organization and major articulations.
