Description
Dorsal anatomy of the female antebrachium is presented from a posterior perspective, with the olecranon and proximal ulna positioned superiorly and the distal radius and ulna widening toward the wrist. Superficial extensor compartment muscles occupy the central and lateral posterior forearm, including extensor digitorum, extensor carpi ulnaris along the ulnar border, and extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis tracking distally toward the bases of the second and third metacarpals. Laterally, brachioradialis forms a prominent ridge as it descends toward the radial styloid, while the extensor retinaculum spans transversely across the dorsal carpus to bind the extensor tendons in their compartments. Bony landmarks and tendon directions are easy to read. Posterior forearm anatomy matters most when you need to localize pain, weakness, or sensory change to a specific extensor tendon, muscle belly, or nerve level. The radial nerve’s deep branch (posterior interosseous nerve) innervates most extensors after passing through the supinator, and entrapment at the arcade of Frohse can mimic lateral epicondylitis while selectively weakening finger and thumb extension. Dorsal wrist pain after repetitive extension often tracks to tenosynovitis within the extensor retinaculum compartments, such as intersection syndrome where first compartment tendons cross the second compartment tendons in the distal dorsoradial forearm.
