Description

Centered on the anterior chest wall of an adult woman, the sternum lies in the midline with the manubrium and sternal angle marking the transition to the body of the sternum and the level of the second costal cartilages. Laterally, the clavicles run from the sternoclavicular joints toward the acromia, framing the superior border of the thorax and the root of the neck. Overlying the pectoralis major on each side, the mammary glands (breasts) occupy the superficial fascia from roughly the second to sixth ribs, extending laterally toward the anterior axillary line, with the areolae and nipples positioned on the anterior surface as key surface landmarks. Inferiorly, the costal margins and the transition toward the upper abdominal wall define the lower boundary of the thoracic region.
