Centered on the anterior shoulder girdle, the deltopectoral triangle is defined by the lateral border of pectoralis major medially, the anterior border of deltoid laterally, and the clavicle superiorly, creating the infraclavicular fossa (Morenheim’s fossa) just inferior to the clavicle. Superficially, the deltopectoral groove typically carries the cephalic vein as it ascends proximally toward the clavipectoral fascia, lying anterior to the coracoid process and deep to the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the female chest wall. The contour also relates laterally to the acromion and superiorly to the clavicular head of pectoralis major, with the axillary fold beginning inferior and lateral to the fossa. Clear surface landmarks matter. Surgeons use this corridor daily. The deltopectoral approach for proximal humerus fracture fixation and shoulder arthroplasty exploits the internervous plane between deltoid (axillary nerve) and pectoralis major (medial and lateral pectoral nerves), and the cephalic vein is the structure you protect or deliberately mobilize as you enter the interval. The same infraclavicular region becomes a practical map for venous access, including cephalic vein cutdown for ports and pacemakers, and it helps clinicians understand why infraclavicular incisions must respect the underlying clavipectoral fascia and the nearby axillary vessels.
