Description
Running from the mandibular symphysis to the suprasternal (jugular) notch, the female anterior neck is organized around the midline laryngeal framework: hyoid bone superiorly, thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage centrally, and the tracheal rings descending inferiorly. Superficial layers include skin and platysma, with the paired sternocleidomastoid muscles forming the lateral borders of the anterior cervical region and framing the midline infrahyoid strap muscles (sternohyoid, sternothyroid, omohyoid). Deep to the strap muscles, the thyroid gland occupies the lower anterior neck, its isthmus typically crossing the 2nd to 4th tracheal rings, while the carotid sheaths lie posterolateral, alongside the larynx and upper trachea. Landmarks on the front of the neck matter because they guide airway and endocrine procedures where a few millimeters change the risk profile: the cricothyroid membrane sits immediately inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the cricoid, while the thyroid isthmus and anterior jugular venous network can complicate a low midline incision. Misidentifying these relationships is a common contributor to bleeding during emergency cricothyrotomy or to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury during thyroidectomy when dissection strays posteromedially near the tracheoesophageal groove. This is anatomy you palpate.
