Seen from the lateral aspect, the female hip (coxa) contour is defined by the iliac crest superiorly, the anterior superior iliac spine projecting anterolaterally, and the greater trochanter forming a palpable lateral prominence at the proximal femur. Overlying this bony scaffold, the gluteus medius and minimus occupy the superolateral buttock and insert on the lateral and anterior facets of the greater trochanter, while gluteus maximus lies posteriorly and blends distally with the iliotibial tract along the lateral thigh. The gluteal fold marks an inferior skin crease, and the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is expected to course near the ASIS before passing onto the anterolateral thigh. Landmarks matter. Clinically, this lateral hip anatomy is where gait mechanics and common pain generators intersect. Tendinopathy at the gluteus medius or minimus insertion, often grouped under greater trochanteric pain syndrome, localizes just posterior or superior to the greater trochanter and can mimic intra-articular hip disease unless you relate symptoms to the trochanter and IT band. The same surface landmarks guide lateral and anterolateral approaches for total hip arthroplasty, where protecting the superior gluteal nerve and preserving abductor function becomes a practical concern rather than an academic one. Use this asset for teaching regional surface anatomy of the pelvis and proximal thigh in gross anatomy, physical examination, sports medicine, and orthopedic modules, or for medical publishing where accurate female hip proportions and lateral landmarking are required for text and patient-facing materials.
