Lateral to the tibial shaft, the fibula sits posterolateral in the leg but contributes a palpable lateral contour as it descends toward the lateral malleolus. Along the anterolateral surface, the muscle belly of tibialis anterior typically forms a gentle longitudinal prominence just lateral to the crest, with extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus lying more laterally and deep, their tendons tracking distally beneath the extensor retinacula toward the dorsum of the foot.
