Rendered from a posterior perspective, the female lower limb is presented from the gluteal fold to the plantar aspect, with surface and deeper contours of the extensor and flexor compartments readable along the entire extremity. Proximally, gluteus maximus dominates the buttock, while the iliotibial tract tracks inferolaterally toward the lateral condyle of the tibia, framing the lateral thigh against the biceps femoris. Medially and posteriorly the hamstrings (semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris) converge toward the knee, creating the boundaries of the popliteal fossa, and distally the triceps surae (gastrocnemius heads over soleus) tapers into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Posterior anatomy is where gait mechanics become visible. The hamstrings span hip extension and knee flexion, so their relative bulk and course help explain common proximal hamstring tendinopathy at the ischial tuberosity and distal strains near the musculotendinous junction in sprinting injuries. Around the popliteal fossa, the relationship of biceps femoris laterally and the medial hamstrings guides safe palpation and injection planning while keeping the tibial nerve and popliteal vessels in mind, and the superficial course of the small saphenous vein toward the popliteal vein supports teaching venous access and varicosity patterns.
