Description
Centered on the distal femoral region, the female lower thigh is presented with emphasis on surface anatomy overlying the femur as it expands toward the medial and lateral condyles. Anteriorly, the quadriceps femoris mass (rectus femoris with vastus medialis and vastus lateralis) frames the suprapatellar area, while the iliotibial tract runs longitudinally along the lateral thigh toward Gerdy’s tubercle on the proximal tibia. Medially, the adductor compartment contours blend into the sartorius and gracilis courses as they approach the pes anserinus just inferior to the knee, creating anteromedial landmarks you can palpate in the living subject. Clinical relevance concentrates at the transition from thigh to knee, where muscle bellies become tendons and neurovascular structures shift planes. The adductor canal lies deep to sartorius in the distal anteromedial thigh and carries the femoral artery and vein with the saphenous nerve, a relationship that matters for adductor canal blocks and for avoiding iatrogenic injury during medial knee incisions. Distally, the quadriceps tendon and patellar retinacula transmit force to the patella and tibial tuberosity, so ruptures, tendinopathy, and postoperative scarring after knee arthroplasty are best understood against this topography.
