Description
Centered on the posterolateral temporal bone, the mastoid process projects inferior to the squamous temporal region and posterior to the external acoustic meatus. Superiorly, the supramastoid crest and posterior root of the zygomatic process frame the transition toward the temporal fossa, while the occipitomastoid suture marks the posterior boundary with the occipital bone. The stylomastoid region lies anteroinferior to the mastoid tip, where the styloid process, stylomastoid foramen, and digastric notch sit in close proximity to the attachments of sternocleidomastoid and the posterior belly of digastric. Surface landmarks matter here. A lateral mastoid view is the one you want when teaching surgical orientation for cortical mastoidectomy and when discussing why mastoid air cell disease tracks toward high-risk neighbors such as the sigmoid sinus (posteromedial) and the facial nerve as it exits at the stylomastoid foramen. Acute mastoiditis, cholesteatoma, and otomastoiditis are not abstract diagnoses in this region, they explain retroauricular tenderness, postauricular swelling with auricular protrusion, and the imaging emphasis on mastoid opacification and bony septation loss. The mastoid emissary vein and the mastoid foramen (when present) also deserve mention, because they provide a venous route between extracranial veins and the sigmoid sinus that can complicate infection spread or operative bleeding. Use this asset in head and neck gross anatomy labs, otology teaching files, and atlas plates that need clean external landmarks for correlating physical exam with CT of the temporal bone. It also fits operative consent materials and patient education on mastoid surgery when you need an accurate lateral reference without distracting cross-sectional detail.
