Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the female brachium is centered on the triceps brachii, with its long head positioned medially, lateral head laterally, and the deep medial head contributing around the distal tendon as it narrows toward the olecranon. Superiorly, the posterior deltoid overlaps the proximal humerus and forms the rounded shoulder contour, while the posterior axillary fold is shaped by the long head of triceps alongside teres major. Along the posterolateral distal arm, the lateral intermuscular septum marks the transition toward the extensor compartment of the forearm, and the course of the radial nerve with the profunda brachii artery is inferred as it spirals from medial to lateral within the radial groove of the humerus. Clear compartmental topography. Clinical teaching often hinges on this posterior view because it maps where the radial nerve is most exposed in midshaft humeral fractures and where it becomes palpably superficial as it approaches the lateral epicondylar region. Orthopedic approaches to the humeral shaft and posterior plating depend on recognizing the interval between the long and lateral heads of triceps and respecting the nerve as it exits the spiral groove. Triceps tendon pathology and posterior elbow pain are also better framed when the proximal muscle bellies and distal tendon line of pull are understood in relation to the humerus.
