Description
Anterior sectioning through the adult female urinary bladder exposes the apex directed superiorly toward the anterior abdominal wall and the corpus forming the dominant central chamber. The detrusor muscle wall encircles the lumen, while the mucosa lies internally with folds that smooth as the bladder distends. Inferiorly, the bladder neck narrows toward the internal urethral orifice, positioned closer to the pelvic floor, and the anterior surface relates to the retropubic space. This anterior sectional perspective helps teach the bladder’s layered construction and lumen geometry, the same features evaluated when interpreting cystography, CT urography, or MR pelvis for wall thickening and intraluminal filling defects. It also aligns with procedural anatomy: transurethral instrumentation follows the urethra into the bladder neck, and the trigone region (though not always emphasized in an anterior cut) remains the key landmark during cystoscopy and during assessment of vesicoureteral reflux. Orientation matters. A small change in section plane can shift the apparent relationship of apex, corpus, and neck, which is why trainees often misjudge lesion location without a clear reference view.
