Description
Centered in the proximal anterior thigh, the femoral triangle (trigonum femorale, Scarpa triangle) is bounded superiorly by the inguinal ligament, laterally by the medial border of the sartorius, and medially by the medial border of the adductor longus. Its apex points inferiorly where sartorius crosses adductor longus, continuing into the adductor canal (canalis adductorius). Within the triangle, the femoral nerve lies most lateral, the femoral artery sits medial to it, and the femoral vein lies medial to the artery, with the femoral canal and deep inguinal lymphatics occupying the most medial compartment beneath the cribriform fascia. Palpation and access here matter because the femoral artery is superficial in the femoral triangle, just inferior to the inguinal ligament at the midinguinal point, making it the standard landmark for arterial puncture and catheterization for coronary and peripheral angiography. Mistaking the inguinal ligament level can drive the needle too proximal into the external iliac artery and retroperitoneum, while going too medial risks venous puncture and hematoma. This region also frames common groin pathology, including femoral hernia passing through the femoral ring into the femoral canal, classically presenting inferolateral to the pubic tubercle, and compressive lesions affecting the femoral nerve with quadriceps weakness.
