Description
Seen in lateral perspective, the infragluteal fold (plica glutea) forms a crescentic skin crease marking the inferior border of the buttock, where the gluteal region transitions onto the posterior thigh. Superior to the fold, the surface contour reflects the bulk of gluteus maximus; inferior and slightly anterior, the thigh contour begins as the soft tissues overlying the proximal femur and hamstrings. Posteriorly the crease trends toward the gluteal cleft, while anteriorly it tapers toward the lateral hip and upper thigh. A simple landmark. Clinically, the gluteal fold is a practical surface reference for the inferior extent of gluteus maximus and for estimating the location of the ischial tuberosity deep to the lower buttock, a pressure point in seated patients and a common site for bursitis. This lateral view also helps clarify why intramuscular injections belong in the ventrogluteal region (gluteus medius and minimus) rather than low and posterior near the fold, where the sciatic nerve lies deep and medial in the posterior hip. In body-contouring and reconstructive practice, surgeons also use the infragluteal crease when planning gluteal lift incisions and assessing postoperative symmetry. Useful for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in musculoskeletal or clinical skills courses, and as a reference image for patient education materials on safe injection sites, pressure injury prevention, and gluteal aesthetic surgery planning. It also fits well in orthopedic, sports medicine, and plastic surgery publications discussing posterior hip landmarks and proximal hamstring region complaints.
