Description
Centered on the anterior abdominal wall of an adult female, the umbilicus sits on the linea alba between the paired rectus abdominis muscles, with the semilunar lines marking their lateral borders where the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis aponeuroses converge. Superiorly, the lower costal margin and xiphoid region define the upper limit of the visible field, while inferiorly the abdominal base transitions into the suprapubic area over the pubic symphysis and mons pubis. Laterally, the iliac crests sweep toward the anterior superior iliac spines, and the inguinal ligaments form oblique bands from each ASIS to the pubic tubercle, framing the inguinal region. Subtle surface contours reflect the underlying midsection musculature and the typical female distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue. For teaching and clinical communication, these landmarks matter because they guide incision planning and safe instrument placement on the anterior abdomen, where a few centimeters can separate a clean transrectus approach from an avoidable neurovascular or fascial complication.
