Description
Centered on the lower pole of the breast, the inframammary region is defined by the inframammary fold (inframammary crease) where breast skin reflects onto the anterior chest wall, forming a curved line that runs inferolaterally from near the parasternal area toward the anterior axillary line. Superior to the fold lies the inferior breast parenchyma and overlying skin; inferior to it, the skin transitions onto the upper abdominal wall and costal margin. Medially, the fold approaches the sternum and xiphoid region; laterally it relates to the contour over the serratus anterior and the lateral thoracic wall, with the underlying ribs and intercostal spaces giving the crease its stable base. Surgeons treat the inframammary fold as a fixed landmark for breast aesthetics and for access. Incisions placed in or just inferior to the fold are common for subglandular or subpectoral implant placement, reduction mammoplasty, and mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, because the crease can hide scars while also defining lower pole position and implant pocket boundaries. The same skin-on-skin interface predisposes to inframammary intertrigo and candidiasis, and fold displacement or blunting is a frequent complication after reconstruction that requires careful re-creation of the fold’s dermal attachments to the chest wall. Use this anterior surface anatomy view when teaching breast topography in gross anatomy and clinical skills courses, or when illustrating operative planning for inframammary incisions, implant selection, and postoperative scar placement in plastic surgery and breast oncology texts.
