Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male lower limb is organized as a continuous chain from pelvis to foot, with the femur angling inferiorly toward the knee, the tibia descending to the ankle, and the fibula positioned posterolateral to the tibial shaft. Anteriorly, the patella caps the femoral condyles, while the gastrocnemius and soleus form the dominant posterior contour of the calf, tapering into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon before inserting on the calcaneus. Distally, the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot align to form the longitudinal arch, with the toes projecting anteriorly in standard anatomical position. Overall limb alignment is easy to judge here. Lateral views matter when you are teaching or assessing sagittal plane mechanics, because hip extension and flexion, knee recurvatum, and ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion all read directly against the limb’s bony axes. This perspective also frames common clinical problems: a shortened Achilles tendon or limited ankle dorsiflexion can drive compensatory knee flexion and altered gait, and genu recurvatum often becomes obvious when the femoral shaft, tibial shaft, and heel strike line are considered together. Orthopedic planning often starts with this simple geometry.
