Description
Surface anatomy of the adult male shoulder region is rendered with emphasis on the scapular (pectoral) girdle and the glenohumeral joint where the arm meets the trunk. Anterior landmarks include the clavicle coursing from the sternoclavicular region to the acromion, the deltoid contour draping the lateral shoulder, and the pectoralis major forming the anterior axillary fold medial to the proximal humerus. The acromion and coracoid process sit superior and anterior to the humeral head, while the scapular spine and infraspinous fossa occupy a more posterior plane, framing the rounded humeral contour laterally. This relationship of clavicle, scapula, and proximal humerus is the anatomic basis of shoulder range of motion, and it is also where common injuries declare themselves on inspection. Anterior prominence at the distal clavicle points you toward acromioclavicular separation, while loss of the normal deltoid roundness with a widened acromiohumeral interval raises concern for anterior glenohumeral dislocation and associated axillary nerve compromise. The anterior shoulder also guides safe injection technique, with the deltoid intramuscular zone centered lateral to the acromion and away from the bicipital groove and neurovascular structures of the axilla.
