Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the neurocranial vault (calvaria) is outlined from the frontal squama anteriorly across the paired parietal bones to the occipital bone posteriorly, forming the braincase or skullcap. The coronal and lambdoid sutures arc superior to the temporal region, while the sagittal suture tracks along the midline at the vertex between the parietals. Inferiorly, the contour approaches the squamous part of the temporal bone and the region of the pterion, a thin-walled junction where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones meet. Clean bony landmarks dominate. This profile is the teaching view for how the cranial vault wraps the cerebral hemispheres and how sutural anatomy dictates fracture patterns and surgical entry points. At the pterion, a seemingly small surface landmark matters because a blow here can lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery and produce an epidural hematoma.
