Description

Bisected along the median sagittal plane, the female body is presented in half view so the external surface on one side can be read against the internal sectional anatomy on the other. Superiorly, the cranial region transitions into the cervical region, with the facial and scalp contours opposed by a cut surface that logically includes brain, pharynx, larynx, and cervical vertebrae in profile. Inferior to the thorax, the abdominal cavity continues into the pelvic region, where the urinary bladder sits anterior to the uterus and vagina, and the rectum remains posterior, all aligned along the midline. Upper and lower limbs are regionally segmented into brachial and antebrachial parts, then femoral, crural, and pedal parts, with proximal-to-distal relationships preserved for teaching gross anatomy. A median section is a workhorse for orientation because it ties surface landmarks to compartment anatomy without the visual ambiguity of oblique cuts, and it clarifies what lies anterior versus posterior when learners struggle with spatial reasoning. This is also the plane most often invoked when discussing pelvic organ support and prolapse, where the position of the uterus relative to the bladder and rectum matters, and when describing endometriosis or deep infiltrating disease along the rectovaginal septum. Midline relevance is practical. Many surgical approaches, from infraumbilical midline laparotomy to Pfannenstiel entry, rely on an accurate mental map of these relationships.
