Description
Running from superficial to deep, the epidermis is rendered as a stratified keratinized epithelium overlying the dermis, with a clear undulating dermal-epidermal junction suggestive of rete ridges and dermal papillae. Hair follicles descend obliquely from the surface into the dermis, each paired with a sebaceous gland and an arrector pili muscle inserting on the follicular sheath. Deeper still, coiled eccrine sweat glands sit in the reticular dermis near small arteries and veins, while the hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue) appears as lobulated adipose separated by fibrous septa.
