Description
Layered anatomy of the female antebrachium is presented with the superficial fascia removed to expose the principal flexor and extensor muscle groups around the radius and ulna. Superficially, the brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus form a lateral border, while the flexor carpi ulnaris tracks along the medial ulnar side toward the pisiform. Deeper planes logically include the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus on the anterior compartment, the extensor digitorum and extensor pollicis longus on the posterior compartment, and the interosseous membrane spanning between the shafts to define the central axis for pronation and supination. Clinical relevance centers on how these muscle bellies, tendons, and neurovascular bundles crowd the distal forearm where space is limited. The median nerve and flexor tendons converge toward the carpal tunnel, so this dissection-style view helps explain why tenosynovitis or distal radius swelling can amplify paresthesia in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Pain patterns make more sense when you can track tendons from proximal muscle origins toward the wrist, including common extensor origin overload in lateral epicondylitis and intersection-type friction where the first dorsal compartment (abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis) crosses the extensor carpi radialis tendons.
