Description

The rendering shows a fetus of approximately 19 weeks' gestation lying in a flexed attitude inside the translucent amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascular uterine wall. Body proportions are typical for the middle of the second trimester: the cranium is still large relative to the trunk, the scalp is hairless, and the eyelids remain fused, while the external ear has assumed a recognisable helix and lobule against the side of the head. Both hands are brought up beneath the chin with individual digits distinguishable, the lower limbs are flexed at hip and knee with fully formed feet and toes, and the umbilicus is visible on the anterior abdominal wall. From it the umbilical cord ascends toward the placental disc seen as a darker, richly perfused thickening of the uterine lining, the single umbilical vein and paired arteries indicated by contrasting blue and red vessels.
