Description
At roughly 25 weeks of gestation the fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, head turned toward the viewer with fused eyelids still closed and the auricle of the ear well modelled. The upper limb is raised so the open hand displays five separated digits, while the lower limbs are drawn up with the plantar surfaces and toes visible. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall at the umbilicus and spirals toward the discoid placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguished by colour within the surrounding Wharton's jelly. The translucent amniotic membrane arches over the fetus, and the vascularised uterine wall with the maternal surface of the placenta frames the whole scene.
